British Columbia

Victoria

Thanks to its mild climate and precipitation, Victoria BC is known as the Garden City, with spring flower blooms starting as early as February. Victoria is also full of delicate cherry blossom trees, painting a pink hue across the area in early spring. As the weather starts to warm, flowers bursting with colour are peppered all throughout city gardens, most notably at Beacon Hill Park.

Harrison

This small lakeside community boasts the title of Canada’s largest tulip festival, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The festival typically opens in early to mid-April, featuring a beautiful backdrop of Mount Cheam and over 14-million spring flowers blooming. It’s no wonder this spring festival was named The World’s Best Instagrammable Tulip Farm!

Kelowna is one of the most visited cities in all of BC and is known for its wineries and orchards. April and May are prime months to see rows of cherry, apple, and peach trees blooming, and to experience the wineries before the summer crowds.

Waterton Lakes National Park

Named the Wildflower Capital of Canada, Waterton Lakes is one of the best places to visit in the spring season. Brilliant trail side blooms paint the park shades of pink, purple, and yellow beginning around late May. Some of the best trails to spot these flowers on are Bellevue Prairie Trail and Horseshoe Basin Trail.

Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area

Located approximately 255 km from Edmonton, this provincial recreation area is known for its vast natural landscape, dense forests, and wildlife spotting. The Shaw Lake Trails feature an array of wildflowers sprouting in late spring/early summer. You can also spot some of Alberta’s famous wild roses in the area!

Bow Valley Provincial Park

Bow Valley Provincial Park is located just 20 km from Canmore and boasts a wide variety of walking trails that venture into lush alpine meadows. Notably, Elk Flats Trail is one of the best (and easiest) hikes to experience Alberta’s wildflowers.

The Meewasin Valley

The Meewasin Valley is full of conservation areas, trails, and parks, with the main trail spanning over 105 km along both sides of the river. Colourful early spring flowers like purple Prairie Crocus begin to pop up before the snow melts, while other species like Three-flowered Avens begin to emerge in May. Some of the best flower-spotting stops in this area are Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Crocus Prairie, and Beaver Creek Conservation Area.

Grasslands National Park

This national park is one of the best places to spot rare and unique flower species in the spring/early summer. The warmer seasons bring a beautiful blend of sweet aromas and colourful blooms such as crocus, rose, violets, and buttercups to the area.
