Your RV Checklist: 14 Things to Do Before You Go Spring Camping

Spring break and the start of camping season is just a few weeks away, and we can’t wait! However, before you hit the road, there’s some inspections, preparations, and planning to do. Especially if your RV has sat in storage over the winter.
That’s why we’ve created this ultimate guide of 14 things to do before RV spring camping, so can ensure a calm and successful start to the camping season!

1. Inspect the Outside of Your RV (Roof, Seals, Awning)
Winter and sudden weather changes can be harsh on your RV, so it’s important to inspect the roof and seals for any minor damages to prevent them from turning into larger problems later. Now is also a good time to roll out your awning and inspect it for any grime or tears.
2. Check Tires and Tire Pressure
Temperature drop can cause exterior flaws and tire pressures to drop (especially if your RV has summer tires). Before going on a test drive, be sure to check the integrity of your tires and inflate them to the proper PSI if necessary.

3. Test Your Propane
Reinstall and check your propane tanks to confirm they’re still full and not showing any signs of erosion. It’s also a good idea to fire up your propane appliances like stoves and furnaces to ensure everything is working properly.
4. De-Winterize and Drain Water
De-winterizing is as simple as following these steps:
- Open the low point drain valves located on the underside of your RV to drain out the anti-freeze. *Note: Please follow the specific de-winterizing instructions in your owner’s manual for your RV’s water heater, as it often requires extra care and steps.
- Close the drains and connect your RV to your city water connection. Flush water through the system by turning on all your faucets. Don’t forget to flush the toilet(s) and run the outdoor shower as well!
- Once water begins to run clear, keep flushing for 1-2 minutes to ensure all the antifreeze has been cleared out.
- Check around the plumbing connections in your RV to ensure there are no leaking seals or pipes.

5. Sanitize Your Water System
Now that you’ve de-winterized, it’s a good idea to sanitize your water system to remove any bacteria. You can do this by adding a diluted bleach solution to your freshwater tank and running it through the system. Let this solution sit for a couple of hours and then drain and flush your RV’s system thoroughly.
6. Reinstall and Check Your Batteries
Batteries drain easily when left unused, so be sure to test them, check the charge, and replace or charge them up if needed.
7. Test Electrical Functions
Connect to shore power and ensure the slide moves properly without any snags, the lights work, and your RV fridge is running.

8. Inspect the Engine
If you’re camping in a motorhome, be sure to check the engine oil, coolant, and fluids. Keep your eye out for any cracks on belts and hoses and follow up with regular maintenance appointments like oil changes and brake inspections as well.
9. Take it for a Test Drive
Hook up your tow vehicle and perform a pre-driving inspection. Check your hitch for any damage and test your break lights and signals. One you’re good to go, take your RV for a spin to make sure everything is road ready.

10. Check Emergency Functions
Perform tests and inspections on all emergency equipment like smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers. Ensure emergency exits are accessible and can open.
11. Test the A/C and Heating
Test and inspect the A/C and heating in your unit for damage and dirty filters. Clean and replace your filters if needed.

12. Give the Interior a Spring Cleaning
Now is the perfect time to deep clean your RV before the camping season starts. Wash all linens, clean the fridge and pantry, wash windows and window screens, and be sure to do a thorough vacuum and mop. It’s also a good idea to clean any fans or vents to prevent dust buildup.
13. Wash the Exterior
This isn’t just for looks! If your RV was left sitting for a long time (especially outdoors), it’s important to wash off any dirt and grime that could scratch the paint or finish. Give the awning a scrub as well and let it dry completely before retracting.

14. Get Your Passes and Reserve Your Campsites
Camping in Canada is all about planning ahead! Reservations and campsites can fill up fast, so it’s important to book your stay ahead of time and purchase any camping or parks passes needed.
