Why Repacking Your RV’s Wheel Bearings Could Save Your Trip (and Your Life)

If there’s one maintenance job RV owners love to put off, it’s the wheel bearing repack. It’s greasy, it requires getting under the trailer, and unlike tire pressure or oil levels, you can’t check it with a quick glance. Skipping it is one of the most common and most preventable causes of roadside breakdowns in the RV world.

A failed wheel bearing doesn’t just leave you stranded. At highway speed, a bearing that seizes can overheat to the point of catching fire, or it can shear off entirely and send a wheel rolling down the road. Both have happened to real RVers, and both are avoidable with a maintenance task that takes an afternoon and costs far less than a tow truck.

Your trailer’s hubs ride on tapered roller bearings packed in grease, sealed in by a grease seal at the back of the hub. Over time and miles, that grease breaks down from heat and friction, picks up moisture, and loses its ability to protect the metal-on-metal contact inside the bearing.

1. Removing the wheel and hub.

2. Pulling the bearings completely out.

3. Cleaning all the old grease off the bearings, races, and inside of the hub.

4. Inspecting the bearings and races for pitting, scoring, or heat discoloration.

5. Hand-packing fresh, high-quality grease into the bearing.

6. Installing a new grease seal (never reuse the old one).

7. Inspecting the brakes and completing adjustments as needed.

8. Reassembling and properly torquing the spindle nut to spec.

This is an important distinction; if your trailer has an EZ-Lube fitting (a grease zerk on the end of the spindle), pumping in fresh grease periodically is a helpful supplement, but it is not a substitute for a full repack. The zerk pushes grease through the bearings while they’re spinning, but it doesn’t let you inspect the bearings, races, or seal. Overdoing it can blow out the rear seal and contaminate your brakes.

It’s worth going straight to the source rather than relying on internet folklore, since the two biggest names in trailer axles publish official guidance.

Dexter Axle, one of the most widely used axle brands in the towable RV industry, states plainly in its Bearings FAQ that bearings should be lubricated every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Dexter also publishes full service manuals covering bearing adjustment and lubrication procedures in its Resources / Manuals library.

Lippert Components (LCI), the other major axle and chassis supplier for RVs, sets the interval slightly longer in its official Master Owner’s Manual — Axles and Suspension: a periodic bearing inspection and a bearing lubrication inspection should be performed annually or every 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Time matters as much as mileage. Grease degrades and moisture can work its way in even if the trailer never leaves the driveway. A trailer that only goes out a few hundred miles a year still needs annual attention.

The exact interval depends on your axle brand. Check the tag on your axle tube, or your RV’s owner’s manual, to confirm whether you have Dexter, Lippert, or another manufacturer’s axles, since recommended intervals and lubrication types (grease vs. oil bath, for example) differ.

If you can’t find your trailer’s specific documentation, most RV manufacturers post their component manuals online. Searching “[your RV brand] component manuals axle” or checking the manufacturer’s owner-resources page will usually turn up the exact Dexter or Lippert manual that matches your axle.

Trailer wheel bearings work harder than the ones on your tow vehicle. A tow vehicle’s bearings are sealed, lubricated for life, and rarely opened. RV trailer bearings, by contrast, are open, serviceable, and exposed to:

· Long periods of sitting unused, which lets grease settle and moisture creep in.

· Heavier per-wheel loads relative to their size.

· Sharper turning angles that put more lateral stress on the bearings.

· Water exposure from rain, road spray, etc.

A bearing that’s losing grease starts generating excess heat. That heat can be the first warning sign, but it’s also the last one before failure. Once a bearing has run dry long enough to discolor or pit the metal, it usually can’t be saved with fresh grease alone; it needs to be replaced, and often the seal and race need replacing too.

Even with a proper repack on schedule, get in the habit of doing a quick hub-temperature check every time you stop for fuel on a travel day. Place the back of your hand near (not on, if it’s very hot) on each hub. A little warmth is completely normal. A hub that’s too hot to touch is a sign a bearing is failing right now, pull over, let it cool, and have it inspected before continuing.

A wheel bearing repack isn’t glamorous maintenance, but it’s one of the cheapest forms of insurance you can buy for your RV. Whether you do it yourself with a torque wrench, a few tubes of marine-grade or lithium-complex grease, and an afternoon in the driveway, or you have a service center handle it, the schedule is clear and published by the people who build the axles: roughly once a year, or somewhere between 12,000 and 36,000 miles depending on your axle brand, whichever comes first.
